And then her heart changed, or at least she understood it; and the winter passed, and the sun shone upon her. —J. R. R. Tolkien  (via dear-abigail)

J. R. R. Tolkien’s handwritten letter discussing the motivation behind the Lord of the Rings.[x]

“I wrote The Lord of the Rings because I wished ‘to try my hand at a really long story that would hold the attention of readers, amuse them, delight them, and at times maybe excite them or deeply move them.”

In all the deeds of Melkor the Morgoth upon Arda, in his vast works and in the deceits of his cunning, Sauron had a part, and was only less evil than his master in that for long he served another and not himself. But in after years he rose like a shadow of Morgoth and a ghost of his malice, and walked behind him on the same ruinous path down into the Void. —The Silmarillion, J.R.R. When Bilbo tells Bofur that Dwarves are used to not belonging anywhere. And Bofur (hurt) agrees…

Fans who haven’t read the Silmarillion don’t really understand the depth of that hurt.

The Dwarves were created behind the back of Eru (Middle Earth’s God analogue.) And were only begrudgingly allowed to exist.

They don’t really belong anywhere on every level you can possibly imagine.

”The world is indeed full of peril and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”
